Len Rome’s Local Health: Teen weight loss surgery
(WYTV) – A new study from Nationwide Children’s Hospital on Columbus says that children are not too young for weight loss surgery and they’ve seen very good results.
Almost every teenage candidate for bariatric surgery was already in deep trouble.
Dr. Marc Michalsky says, “The majority of our patients had, not only one, but had multiple cardiovascular risk factors, and in fact, 33 percent of the population studied had three or more identified cardiovascular risk factors”.
But three years after surgery, those risk factors had all but disappeared. Lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise are important, but doctors say they’re often not enough for teenagers who are more than a hundred pounds overweight.
Weight loss surgery for severely obese teenagers is safe and effective, much better than just lifestyle changes alone, to prevent future health problems.
