WEST CHESTER — After a brief summertime recess, the next session of the YMCA’s Healthy Weight Loss program starts the week of Sept. 16.

“After completing the YMCA’s Healthy Weight Loss Program, I lost almost 15 pounds and got the jump start I’ve been unsuccessfully seeking on my own for years,” states Kristen, a current YMCA Healthy Weight Loss Program individual. “Through open-minded guidance and support from fitness and nutritional experts at the YMCA, I was able to ask a lot of specific questions and learned new things to try that I hadn’t thought of before or fully understood. Each week covered a new topic, from learning how to set smart goals to the importance of mindfulness. Classes had a conversational feel and I learned from other group members too as we shared tips and tools. With three months of solid habits built up, I am thrilled with the results and excited to continue a program of regular exercise and better nutrition.”

The YMCA of Greater Brandywine started the tested 12-week program last January. The Healthy Weight Loss Program assists individuals by making little, modest modifications to their everyday habits and forming sustainable, healthy practices. Led by an experienced facilitator, who develops a safe and helpful environment for all, individuals fulfill for one hour weekly and are assisted in conversations on setting goal, well balanced consuming, exercise, tension, mindfulness and more.

“This program is different from other programs in which I have participated in that there was no pressure to ‘lose weight now,’” specifies a program individual. “Weight loss and health is the ultimate goal, not the quick fix. This program gave me things to think about. I know I should be ‘eating right and exercising but why don’t I? This program gave me insights into my behavior by asking very simple questions.”

Nancy Van Orman, another current Healthy Weight Loss Program individual, confesses that attaining and keeping a healthy weight had actually been a battle for the majority of her life. “Of all the weight loss programs I’ve tried,” she states, “I like the Y’s approach best. The emphasis on healthy living and making small changes toward incremental goals makes attaining larger goals more doable. The Y’s Healthy Weight Loss Program is a great way to develop better habits for a healthier life, especially when combined with the support and insight from others in the group. I’m ready to sign up again!”

The Healthy Weight Loss Program is used at 5 branches of the YMCA of Great Brandywine in September: the Brandywine YMCA in Coatesville, the Jennersville YMCA in West Grove, the Kennett Area YMCA in Kennett Square, the Lionville Community YMCA in Exton and the West Chester Area YMCA on Airport Road in West Chester.
