In current years, Tim McGraw has actually made a great deal of attention for his look — both great and bad. Seemingly worried fans and online haters alike have called the country superstar “too thin,” “unhealthy” and even asked if he was fighting a disease. But in truth, McGraw remains in the very best shape of his life.

“Ten years ago was when I really was not taking care of myself as well as I should,” the singer said to the crowd at the grand opening of his shop physical fitness club in January. “My lifestyle wasn’t as good: up until 3 o’clock in the morning, having that extra beer with the band, eating cheeseburgers late and not hitting the gym in the morning.”

Around that very same time, McGraw went to the theater with his wife, Faith Hil,l and their kids, where he appeared on screen in the trailer for his 2008 film, Four Christmases.”

“My oldest daughter said, ‘Geez, Dad. You really need to do something,'” he remembered. “And the next day, I was in the gym.”

Since then, the Grammy-winning artist has cut alcohol from his life and devoted himself to physical fitness. The outcome? An incredible 40-pound weight loss.

“It wasn’t like I was trying to lose 40 pounds, I was just wanting to get healthy,” McGraw just recently informed People. “For me, it is more about feeling good and being where I want to be physically and on stage.”

More than a years after McGraw at first altered his way of life, the 51-year-old remains in visibly much better shape. But for him, it has to do with far more than simply the method he looks.

“I’ve gone through a physical transformation in the last 10 years, but it’s not just my appearance that has changed,” McGraw informed People. “My mind is clearer, my sense of purpose is sharper and my relationships are deeper. Consistent physical exercise helps me bring focus to my life and to the people who mean the most to me.”
